Going Home-Wild Theme- from \Beautiful and varied soundtrack by Mark Knopfler. People call them flaws, but they're wrong. They're the good stuff. What I liked the most about this movie was the beautiful scenery.
What I liked least about this movie was that it was so quiet and slow throughout. It was about 30 minutes too long, I would say.
It is a quiet, movie that almost put me to sleep, although I was a little tired when I started watching it and it seemed to go on for too long.
The acting is good by everyone in the movie and this movie did have charm, what with the nice people who lived in the area of Scotland where the movie took place, and all the nice scenery.
I don't think that this movie will be one that I will be watching again, but it was alright for one night. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries.
There's no need to comment on the film itself, safe to say Local Hero is deservedly much-loved, a truly magical film with a superb score, that deserves to be seen and heard in high quality.
The Blu-ray version looks and sounds fantastic. The film is full of quirky sublety and beautiful landscapes, these come through so well in this version, in some ways like watching the film again for the first time.
Highly recommended, and definitely worth the extra over the DVD version. Great film previously spoiled by the poor quality of the dvd.
Sadly this is really not that much better. Such a shame and quite a surprise considering the capability to remaster really old films.
Edit: Picture quality in places grainy but other parts looks really good. OK the film wins so just dropped a star for the grainy American bits!
One of my favourite films, full of whimsy and humour. A great supporting role by Burt Lancaster but all the cast fit really well. And the beach scene adjoining??
The re-mastered video is absolutely stunning and the wonderful Mark Knopfler soundtrack sounds better than ever. I also enjoyed the extras disc with new interviews with those involved plus a wonderful original interview with Peter Capaldi from the 's.
The stories of the making of the film and filming in Pennan are also fascinating. Great movie, solid transfer.

The Scottish scenery is beautiful, the village quaint and by the time of their great celebration, called a Ceilidh, you'll feel a part of the festivities as the local band, The Acetones plays.
The dance music and subtle musical score were a first time outing for Dire Straits's Mark Knopfler and the soundtrack became a major surprise hit, bigger than the film itself.
The delicate, relaxed music goes perfectly with the film and is good listening to by itself. I highly recommend this film for those who would be inclined to enjoy its special magic.

Great performances all round, a soothing atmosphere and a first for Mark Knopfler providing gorgeous music. Local Hero is a movie I first watched over 25 years ago and it still holds up with a quirky plot, excellent cast, wonderful cinematography and a memorable sound track.
I will watch this movie again and again. Highly recommend this movie. I love Mark Knopfler, and the "Going Home" instrumental from this movie is one of my faves.
That, and all the glowing reviews, led me and my wife to rent and watch this movie. The movie is bad on so many levels it's hard to know where to start.
The script is disjointed and ultimately, pointless. There is no continuity between scenes, and so much of it just implausible.
Most of the scenes just seemed pointless. The "acting" is a joke. Burt Lancaster is wasted, portraying a weird buffoon, and Peter Riegert's wooden monotonous acting is a joke.
YThe supporting cast is no better. Knopfler's music is non-existent until the closing credits, which was a needeed diversion from the head-scratching prompted by the film's ending.
One person found this helpful. Charming and quirky and even mystical, it's an absolute celebration of human eccentricities.
But Lancaster is brilliant as the eccentric chairman of a huge Texas oil company, searching for some kind of meaning in his life.
Pete Riegert is great as a junior executive in the company, sent to remote northern Scotland to buy out a fishing village for the purpose of putting in an oil pipeline operation.
In his own words, he's "normal, extra normal," but the village full of eccentrics think he's a silly Yank. They accept him fully, however, for who he is, seeing in him what he does not see himself.
