The last battle shows the samurai using excellent tactics to trap units of infantry and wear them down in melee before finally charging to their deaths in the face of canon fire and Gatling guns.
This dichotomy further shows the ideological differences of the samurai and gives them sympathy for sticking to their antiquated weapons.
History, however, shows a very different story. While one of the rebellions eschewed modern weapons, the rest of the uprisings, including the final Satsuma one, used modern weapons.
The Satsuma rebels, including Takamori, used rifles and often wore Western style uniforms with a few wearing traditional samurai armor.
The rebels had over 60 pieces of artillery and used them. The Imperial Army at the final battle of Shiroyama won due to superior numbers more than anything else.
The final charge of the samurai was symbolically quite like how it was presented in the film. Although Captain Algren appears to be a fictional character included to have someone to relate to, he is, however, based on a historical character with strikingly similar views and actions.

However, when a lord goes too far, one samurai rebels, leading to the plot for the movie, Samurai Rebellion. Samurai movies often go hand in hand with violence and gore, but this Masaki Kobayashi directed feature goes against the grain to bring you a masterpiece that's not too keen on swordplay.
Barring the last few moments, there is no war or squirmish on display, and the movie is all the better for it.
The film shines a spotlight on the unjust feudal practices that prevailed in Japan in years past, while also serving as social commentary for the disparity of the classes.

View All Critic Reviews Mar 11, This movie is far from perfect. A predictable plot and unnecessary love interest hurt the experience, and the lack of subtitles for scenes entirely in another language can be frustrating.
That being said, The Last Samurai has a lot to like. Tom Cruise is, as always, captivating, and Ken Watanabe earns his Oscar nomination.
The chemistry between these two feels natural, as if they truly have a brotherly bond. The cinematography and costume design add a sense of authenticity.
Hans Zimmer created another great soundtrack fitting of the time period. If you enjoy action flicks or Tom Cruise, give this movie a watch. Ben B Super Reviewer.
Apr 19, A fascinating and inspiring epic, The Last Samurai is a powerful film. The story follows a disillusioned Civil War veteran who's recruited to train the Japanese army in Western warfare as they prepare to take on a Samurai rebellion.
Tom Cruise and Ken Watanabe lead the cast and give excellent performances. The directing is also quite remarkable, and captures the spiritual aspects of nature and of the Samurai culture.
Additionally, the writing does an effective job at depicting the culture clashes, and at developing the characters. The score by Hans Zimmer is brilliantly done as well, perfectly complementing the film and enhancing the themes.
