It holds up in sublime fashion. And yes, Mohr is was? I am so saddened to have reached the end of the series. I dragged them out as long as possible, in excruciating delight.
I'll agree that this is the best episode of the series note: "Red Wind," not "The Red Wind" , based on what I think is the best Marlowe story.
The original is a little too involved to include all the subplots, but what comes through here was a cut above the rest of the shows.
Chandler used the name for his detective a time or two before settling on Marlowe. If you only read one of his stories, read this one.

I am on my second run through these programs, and I keep discovering new catchy phrases, and very intelligent word play.
The plots of the stories are secondary to the performance, dialogue and atmosphere of the productions. Gerald Mohr is fantastic as Philip Marlowe, giving the right combination of strength, intellect, humor, and humanity to the classic noir detective.
And OTRR has done miracles with these old recordings. A few are still raw, but most are very clear and sound wonderful.
My highest recommendation. The hard-boiled detective Nick Danger was one of their stock characters.
At last, I have had a chance to listen to the original archetype Philip Marlowe and to discover what a loving parody had been created.
It's a strange experience to hear the parody first and then hear the original. When Marlowe whispers to himself while crouched in the dark with his gun in his hand, you won't be able to understand what he is saying.

Essential for insomniacs everywhere. Reviewer: mockdog1 - favorite favorite favorite favorite favorite - June 22, Subject: Red WInd "There was a rough desert wind blowing into Los Angeles that evening.
It was one of those hot, dry Santa Anna winds that comes down out of the mountain passes On nights like that, every booze party ends in a fight, and meek little housewives finger the edge of a carving knife and study their husband's necks.
Anything can happen when the Santa Anna blows in from the desert. Maybe the best episode of the series, and a fine example of noir writing.

If I close my eyes, I can see these stories playing in a smokey movie theatre sixty years ago. Really a pleasure to go through them night after night - I'm on my second go-through now.

The Van Heflin episodes certainly don't diminish the canon. Mohr brings Marlowe to life and the tough, but decent hardboiled private eye.
More relatable than Spade, Chandler's creation shines. Listening to Mohr's Marlowe, you never have any doubt that he's not only a tough man, but a good one.
Simply the best. And let me add that OTRR has done an admirable job on the sound quality in this set. Copyright , thrillingdetective.

So, here's what are generally available as Marlowe short stories these days, although only the last, "Marlowe Takes on the Syndicate" aka "Wrong Pidgeon" or "The Pencil" , was actually written as a Marlowe story..
Killer in the Rain Trouble is My Business Underneath the wisecracking, hard-drinking, tough private eye, Marlowe is quietly contemplative and philosophical and enjoys chess and poetry.
While he is not afraid to risk physical harm, he does not dish out violence merely to settle scores. Morally upright, he is not fooled by the genre's usual femmes fatales , such as Carmen Sternwood in The Big Sleep.
Chandler's treatment of the detective novel exhibits an effort to develop the form. His first full-length book, The Big Sleep , was published when Chandler was 51; his last, Playback when he was Seven novels were produced in the last two decades of his life.
An eighth, Poodle Springs , was completed posthumously by Robert B. Parker and published years later. Explaining the origin of Marlowe's character, Chandler commented that "Marlowe just grew out of the pulps.
He was no one person. The emergence of Marlowe coincided with Chandler's transition from writing short stories to novels.
Chandler was said [3] to have taken the name Marlowe from Marlowe House, to which he belonged during his time at Dulwich College.
Marlowe House was named for Christopher Marlowe , a hard-drinking Elizabethan writer who graduated in philosophy and worked secretly for the government.
Chandler is not consistent as to Marlowe's age. In a letter to D. Ibberson of April 19, , Chandler noted among other things that Marlowe is 38 years old and was born in Santa Rosa, California.
He had a couple of years at college and some experience as an investigator for an insurance company and the district attorney 's office of Los Angeles County.
He was fired from the D. The D. By in The Long Goodbye he has rented a house on Yucca Avenue and continued at the same place in early in Playback , the last full-length Chandler Marlowe novel.
