Matt Damon plays a perfectly creepy young man, Tom Ripley, who wants nothing more than to have a life full of friends.

He quickly forms an obsession over Dickie Greenleaf played by Jude Law whom he was sent to Italy to bring back to the U. The tone of the film changes from fun and playful to grim and violent very quickly.

It's a mildly interesting crime driven character study taking place in a beautiful location: Italy. See it for the performances and visuals.

Kevin M Super Reviewer. Jul 28, The film is always on the verge of becoming your typical art-house psycho-sexual thriller, complete with exotic European locals, sexy sad rich people, homosexuals, opulence, obvious symbolism with mirrors, psychopathy, and, of course, murder.

The film is elevated by Damon's captivating performance and, despite the silliness, I enjoy the twisty plot. Alec B Super Reviewer.

Filthy Rich. No Score Yet. In many ways, Ripley is not unlike Highsmith herself. There is an ever more acute difference—and an intolerableness—between my inner self, which I know is the real me, and various faces of the outside world.

Ripley provided a window through which Highsmith could channel her rage. She also dedicated her books to lovers, former lovers, and her mother.

The brutalities of life drove her to alcohol, but they also drove her—in a fervor that kept her typing about greater brutalities into the wee hours—to write.

And Ripley was the character she wrote the most. Though she worked for years writing comics before publishing her first book, she would never reveal that to anyone.

Her affairs with women would circle affairs with other women and sometimes men. She put forth a revisionist history even in her own diaries, which she kept throughout her life, and, in one of the more odious details of her history, created numerous aliases with which she wrote letters to newspapers and governmental bodies espousing anti-Semitic and racist views.

The French government suspected her of tax fraud, perhaps fairly. Men can do more, like jump over fences. She kept snails as pets, entranced by their self-sufficiency and the lack of a perceptible difference between the male and the female of the species.

The Talented Mr. Ripley is a psychological thriller novel by Patricia Highsmith. This novel introduced the character of Tom Ripley , who returns in four subsequent novels.

It has been adapted numerous times for film, including the film of the same name. Tom Ripley is a young man struggling to make a living in New York City by whatever means necessary, including a series of small-time confidence scams.

One day, he is approached by shipping magnate Herbert Greenleaf to travel to "Mongibello", in Italy, to persuade Greenleaf's errant son, Dickie, to return to the United States and join the family business.

Ripley agrees, exaggerating his friendship with Dickie, a half-remembered acquaintance, in order to gain the elder Greenleaf's trust.

Shortly after his arrival in Italy, Ripley meets Dickie and Dickie's friend Marge Sherwood; although Ripley ingratiates himself with Dickie, Marge does not seem to like him very much.

As Ripley and Dickie spend more time together, Marge feels left out and begins insinuating to Dickie that Ripley is gay. Dickie becomes upset when he unexpectedly finds Ripley in his bedroom dressed up in his clothes and imitating his mannerisms.

From this moment on, Ripley senses that Dickie has begun to tire of him, resenting his constant presence and growing personal dependence. Ripley has indeed become obsessed with Dickie, which is further reinforced by his desire to imitate and maintain the wealthy lifestyle Dickie has afforded him.

As a gesture to Ripley, Dickie agrees to travel with him on a short holiday to Sanremo. Sensing that he is about to cut him loose, Ripley finally decides to murder Dickie and assume his identity.

When the two set sail in a small rented boat, Ripley beats him to death with an oar, dumps his anchor-weighted body into the water, and scuttles the boat.

Ripley assumes Dickie's identity, living off the latter's trust fund and carefully providing communications to Marge to assure her that Dickie has dumped her.

Freddie Miles, an old friend of Dickie's from Dickie's same social set, encounters Ripley at what he supposes to be Dickie's apartment in Rome ; he soon suspects something is wrong.

When Miles finally confronts him, Ripley kills him with an ashtray. He later disposes of the body on the outskirts of Rome, attempting to make police believe that robbers have murdered Miles.

Ripley enters a cat-and-mouse game with the Italian police but manages to keep himself safe by restoring his own identity and moving to Venice.

But the tumultuous relationship was taking a toll. Best Delfin Bilder. Ripley insinuates that Dickie is rejecting him because he is afraid of the feelings they have developed for each other.

The ironic twist is that Tom Ripley is the catalyst for all of this -- yet, his tragic flaw is that he has no flaw.

While each of the main characters has an identity they are running from, Ripley HAS no identity to speak of. He starts out pretending, and he pretends through the entire film.

Who IS Tom Ripley? Even Tom himself wants to know. One would think that this would enable him to become the perfect actor -- when you paint on a blank canvas, one would think you can paint anything.

But even Tom, blank as he is, distills down to someone -- even if it is a blank canvas, a "real nobody. Among his first lines in the film is a line uttered while listening to a jazz record -- he mumbles to himself, "Can't tell if it's a woman or a man.

Is Tom gay or straight? Is he evil or good? Even Tom doesn't know. The film points out that we cannot run from our own darker half.

We are all tempted to become someone else -- anyone who has been made fun of in school, who has longed for the life of the rich and famous, can identify with this The enemy is not without, it is within.

It is this same duality which haunted and tormented so many of Hitchock's characters, most notably but not exclusively Norman Bates in "Psycho.

Ripley" is a worthy heir to that film classic in its ability to get the audience to sympathize and empathize with Tom. We feel his love for Dickie Greenleaf -- we feel his frustration at being shut out of his life -- we feel the awkwardness of being trapped in a situation that was never intended.

As we watched Marion Crane's car pause in the swamp and waited breathlessly, perversely hoping it would sink and allow Norman's mother to get away with murder, so too we watch Tom Ripley descend into darkness, and when the cops arrive at his hotel, we wait breathlessly with Tom, hoping he will get away.

Lisa Schwarzbaum. Familiarity is the watchword of this overblown opus, which neglects holes in the plot to play up its postmodern theme of identity as pastiche -- a clear case of the pot calling the kettle black.

Jonathan Rosenbaum. On balance, The Talented Mr. Ripley is worth seeing more for its undeniably delightful journey than its final destination.

Andrew Sarris. Not only is it an elegantly polished affair, with top notch performances all round, and magnificent camerawork and editing, it's also acutely aware of how class, money and sex shape desire and resentment.

Geoff Andrew. It's all very circuitous and occasionally crafty, but primarily it just goes on for too long. Mike Massie. Definitely the best part Matt Damon's ever had and his best performance.

It's also my favorite. Murtada Elfadl. Lush, star-studded movies like The Talented Mr. Ripley teach us to yearn: for Europe, for charisma, for nice furniture and idler times.

The Talented Mr. Ripley also teaches us how poisonous that longing can be. Amanda Dobbins. A fascinating and often baffling thriller about assumed identity and naked greed, based on the classic book by Patricia Highsmith.

Leigh Paatsch. A "10 Best" achievement, thanks to writer-director Anthony Minghella's acute interpretation of Patricia Highsmith's novel, a shooting style that wallows in decadence and danger, and a choice cast completely in sync with the stringent demands of the story.

Ripley enters a cat-and-mouse game with the Italian police but manages to keep himself safe by restoring his own identity and moving to Venice.

In succession, Marge, Dickie's father, and an American private detective confront Ripley, who suggests to them that Dickie was depressed and may have committed suicide.

Marge stays for a while at Ripley's rented house in Venice. When she discovers Dickie's rings in Ripley's possession, she seems to be on the verge of realising the truth.

Panicked, Ripley contemplates murdering Marge, but she is saved when she says that if Dickie gave his rings to Ripley, then he probably meant to kill himself.

The story concludes with Ripley traveling to Greece and resigning himself to eventually getting caught.

However, he discovers that the Greenleaf family has accepted that Dickie is dead, and that they have transferred his inheritance to Ripley — in accordance with a will forged by Ripley on Dickie's Hermes typewriter.

While the book ends with Ripley happily rich, it also suggests that he may forever be dogged by paranoia.

In one of the final paragraphs, he nervously envisions a group of police officers waiting to arrest him, and Highsmith leaves her protagonist wondering, "
