One person found this helpful. This is a decent book, but I think some of the nuances might have been lost in translation. I wish they had developed Charlotte more as a character in her own right than as an object for Gereon to lust after.
In this respect, the tv show is far superior to the book. Less than 'gripping' period piece. Excellent portrait of Berlin's free-wheeling, per-Nazi days.
I like murder mysteries that come with a certain ripe smell and unseemly feel. You know what I mean: death in its most brutal and starkest form.
So where do you go to get that? A revolutionary fraught Germany in the s when the Weimar republic struggled to maintain law and order in moral cesspools like old Berlin.
The hero of the story, young Detective Inspector Rath, refuses to be corrupted by the criminal culture of the day as he goes about his business of solving a puzzling murder.
Complicating this assignment are a number of big issues: Rath is a cocaine addict; his colleagues are potentially involved in the killing; to arrest them he will likely have to make a deal with the devil; a shipment of gold from Communist Russia threatens to fall into the wrong hands; and he has fallen hard for Charly, a police stenographer.
It will take good savvy police work to bring all the pieces together in such a chaotic environment where crime and vice rule supreme.

I thought this was a great expose of late Berlin, its decadence and its post war recovery. Social Democrats vying with Russian communists, old style Prussian militarism ,and the rise of Nazism.
We have a detective Gereon Rath , seconded to Berlin Vice squad from Cologne , for an unspecified shooting incident.
Initially there is the mystery of a mutilated body , dumped in a canal in a car. The body evidently died before entering the water.
Mix in corruption within the police force and various murders and we have a steamy mix. To some, the book will run slower than the TV series and some plots are missing.
Still a worthwhile read and I have already bought the next Kindle book. Note - in the German the title of the book is Die Nasse Fisch the wet fish - then slang for a cold homicide case unlikely to be solved.
I am always fascinated by Weimar Germany for several unspoken reasons. Rath is variable likable rascal of a detective, well suited to the stuffy, pushy German police force that he found himself in.
The sense of society unraveling is well documented and restrained; he allows you the shock of the well-heeled Frankfurter or Berliner as well as those citizens of the demimonde.
Although his characters are well described they are not always memorable, although they should be. I don't know if that's because I was enmeshed in plot and neglected reading the characters; I am not sure but it has something to do with the writer, who makes inward incursions on character only to pull away when something enlightening or meaningful could be portrayed.
A strange criticism but it is how I perceived the generality of this book. Inspector Rath is a career Homicide officer from Cologne who inadvertently kills a man because of the adverse publicity his father who is a Senior Police Officer gets his son a transfer to Berlin using connections.
No one in Berlin except the commissioner knows about the incident in Cologne. I found Babylon Berlin to be a thriller of the first order, an engaging listen, full of twists and turns.
Indeed the story starts with a man who has clearly been tortured. His battered and bruised lifeless body is found in a stolen car which has been dumped in the river.
But who is this man? Where had be come from? Inspector Rath investigates and he finds out a lot about his new colleagues and Berlin along the way.
The narrative and narration are both excellent. I would highly recommend it. None of the style and atmosphere that glossed over character failings in TV version.
It is rare for a novel to be so very, very poor compared with a TV dramatisation that is based upon it. The writing is so clumsy and glaringly uneven that I can only assume that the original was simply uploaded to Google translate - the dialogue stilted and lame; the characterisation as wooden as it is superficial, and Berlin as atmospheric as Milton Keynes.
The main weakness in the TV version was the lack of psychological plausibility in the central character 'Gideon Rath'. This I had always ascribed to lamentable casting - the actor oscillating for no discernible reason between limp and whining and mildly forceful and decisive - looking, the while, like a pubescent schoolboy around whom, unaccountably, women flocked.
Having read this, the first novel in the sequence, I doubt that a young Werner Herzog could have made him credible.
I am deeply relieved that I bought no more of this vacuous series. Report abuse. This one is earlier but that didn't matter, and it provided some background to the other book anyway.
I love the historical setting and the author brings it alive - it's a fascinating insight into Germany between the wars. However I found I changed my opinion of Rath I won't say any more as I don't want to spoil it for anyone!

Babylon Berlin has shown me that the German film industry is not in limbo anymore, but is now making a major comeback with such wonderful mini-series as this one.
The cinematography, acting, set designs are just superb. I can not get enough of this great series. To the directors, actors and film crews I want to thank you all for this masterpiece and keep up the good work.
