Strolling through the Katakomben Kinox, I found at around the same time a 7-year old video-clip on Youtube which was a teaser for the TV-series "Generation Kill", based on the homonymous book in which Evan Wright chronicled his experiences as an embedded reporter with the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion of the US Marine Corps during the Sex Im Fahrstuhl invasion. They dedicated themselves to honoring the memory and the experiences of the real-life Marines they portray in the series. Rudy Reyes himself said,.

Which goes to show that they picked the right actors for the job. As previously stated, Evan Wright set out to portray the Marines as they were.

From reading his writing, you get a sense that he wanted to show the world that Marines are people, just like anyone else. Such authentic source material meant that the production team had some big shoes to fill — they needed performances that felt real.

Really real. Thankfully, HBO at this point had already done Band of Brothers, which was another accurate depiction of troops in war. For Evan Wright, that kind of pedigree was comforting; he know that HBO would do their best to faithfully adapt his work.

And, of course, Generation Kill has a great cast of actors. As mentioned before, they were extremely dedicated to their roles and understood what it was that they were doing.

Beyond that, every department understood what they were making and made sure to get a lot of the details correct, including costumes.

When it comes to getting things accurate, Generation Kill does an outstanding job. It would be great to sit here and write all of the amazing things the actors and crew had to say about it, but to hear them say it is even better:.

The fighting began at 10pm local time with one Taliban team engaging the flight line personnel, another targeting the refueling area, and a third focusing on destroying aircraft using explosives and RPGs.

It was an aircraft explosion that signaled the start of the attack. Within minutes, six Harriers were burning on the tarmac, the Marine helicopter area was surrounded by fires, and the cryogenics and fuel pit areas were on fire as small arms crackled and tracers lit up the night sky.

The Taliban brought everything from hand grenades to heavy machine guns and caught the Marines completely off guard. Marines scrambled to protective barriers as RPGs exploded around the flight line.

They initially believed it was an attack of opportunity from outside the base — a random, lucky hit from rockets or mortars. But after ten explosions, one every ten seconds, it was clear that this was more than a few lucky shots.

The Troops in Contact alarm began to sound. They called in the British quick reaction force, but they were on the other side of the base and the Marines would have to hold their own until they arrived.

The Marines quickly moved to don their flak jackets and retrieve their rifles. They fired RPGs at the building that housed Marine workstations while another hit a building that contained the medical section.

Christopher Raible, before he could organize a defense. Shrapnel from one of the RPGs lodged in his neck as he was leading a crew full of mechanics and maintainers out into the night as a rifle unit.

By this time, every Marine was operating as a rifleman. Weapons and ammo were doled out to anyone without one and Marines began taking up their fields of fire.

The air wing was a total, confusing mess as the fuel bladders blew up, temporarily turning the night into day. A Huey aircraft commander and two enlisted Marines were the ones who brought the weapons to the flight line area.

They went to check on the entry control point and began to take fire from the cryogenics area. A Huey crew chief manned an M to suppress the enemy fire.

At the same time, Marines were struggling to get remaining aircraft in the air to provide close-air support. All they could muster was two Hueys and a Cobra, but the Marines managed to get them ready to fly in the midst of the confusing, intense attack.

When the helicopters were airborne, things changed quickly on the ground. They told the JTAC to concentrate fire toward the enemy position in the cryogenics facility.

When the southern wall of that building lit up with tracers, the AH-1 Cobra helicopter peppered the building with 20mm rounds and UH-1V Venom Hueys tore through it with After the aerial hit, the British quick reaction force arrived and cleared out the infiltrating Taliban in the cryogenics facility with 40mm grenade launchers.

That left four Taliban hiding in the T-walls near the flight line. As Marines on the ground attempted to converge on the remaining Taliban attackers, guns from the helicopters eliminated the last of the threat.

When the smoke cleared, two Marines, Lt. Raible and Sgt. Bradley Atwell, had been killed. Allied wounded numbered 17, six Harriers were completely destroyed, and another two were damaged, along with an Air Force CE.

Three fuel bladders and a few sunshade hangars were also destroyed. All but one of the attacking Taliban fighters were killed in action.

The attack caused some 0 million in damages. Charles M. Gurganus, left, and Maj. Gregg A. Sturdevant were forced to retire just one year after the raid.

The Marine Corps wanted to know how 15 heavily armed Taliban fighters were able to get onto the base in the first place. It turned out the commander of Bastion, Maj.

Charles Gurganus, reduced the number of Marines patrolling the base of 30, from to just one month before the attack, leaving the base guarded by troops from Tonga.

He and Maj. Gregg Sturdevant were forced to retire in the days following the incident. Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen.

James Amos, said the two failed to accurately assess the strength and capabilities of the enemy in the area and failed to protect their troops.

Sturdevant was the Marine aviation commander of the base and was blamed for inadequate force protection measures on the flight line area that night.

The two Marines who went to check the entry control point found it unmanned before they started taking fire from the cryogenics facility. Meanwhile, the British review of the attack found that only 11 of 24 guard towers were manned that night.

Both generals retired with fully pay and benefits. Later, it would be revealed that the attackers spent months posing as poppy farmers, probing the base defenses and testing reactions from perimeter guards.

They were able to map out the base, its defenses, its fuel farms, and the airfield. They were even trying to target Prince Harry, who was stationed on the base at that time.

Coffee Or Die. Just before 2 p. The pilots, Navy Lt. Theodore Rivenburg and Cmdr. Lukas Dachs, had mere seconds to react as their large transport plane stalled 1, feet above the rough granite and cactus-covered ground below.

Rivenburg and Dachs throttled up their four-radial piston engines and tried to raise the nose as the silver plane made a right turn 2 miles south of the Prescott Municipal Airport.

As the turn tightened, the bank steepened and the Super Connie snap rolled into a near-vertical dive.

Courtesy of Newspapers. In addition to Rivenburg and Dachs, the crash killed everyone else on board, including Lt j. Sixty-one years later, the reasons behind the accident remain a mystery.

Over the years, scrub brush and manzanita grew over the blackened scars of the accident site. Monsoon thunderstorms and winter winds veiled the scraps of aluminum and wiring beneath sand and gravel.

The bright Arizona sun turned the relics a pale gray. With each year, fewer and fewer of those who remember the crash remain. By chance, the Prescott trail manager and some concerned citizens recovered the lost saga, and the city of Prescott dedicated the Constellation Trails to the memory of the crew in a powerful combination of history and outdoor recreation.

Hughes wanted a fleet of commercial aircraft for moving passengers and cargo across the country, and Lockheed wanted his business. Photo courtesy of Wikipedia.

By , the military saw the Constellation as a potential transport, and in Hughes broke cross-country speed records in the olive-green military version called the C From the s through the s, Super Constellations crisscrossed the globe as commercial and military workhorses.

They saw action in Korea and Vietnam. The magazine said that the aircraft could carry 76 passengers or 67 litter patients or a payload of more than 10 tons.

If upended, its wings would easily tower higher than a story building. The crew was on a nine-day temporary duty trip for training to orient themselves around Naval Air Station Litchfield Park, now Phoenix Goodyear Airport.

Around a. At a. The No. The last log entry came at p. Minutes later, while flying north, AF made that right turn into oblivion 2 miles south of the Prescott airport.

The FOIA response came with scanned copies of 23 black-and-white photos of the crash scene. The images show big splotches of black and gray with hand-drawn dashed lines and explanations.

One photo stands out: Two men stand on the highway looking into a hole, hands tucked in their pockets and fedoras tilted on their heads. So he reached out to Cindy Barks, a reporter at the local paper, the Prescott Daily Courier , who helped him figure out that an airplane had crashed there decades before.

He knew then that the community should do something special to honor the fallen aviators. The city chose to name the trail system after the fallen Constellation.

The memorial plaque dedicating the trails to those who died in the Super Constellation crash of T he Constellation Trails weave through sublime rock formations called the Granite Dells.

The red granite boulders look like the backdrop of an old Western movie and have served as the set for many early Westerns and other films since Hosking designed a trail system with an outer loop and multiple cut-throughs to the center.

Near the trailhead, scrub oak passageways filter the sunlight, and as the trail gains elevation, the rock formations become more and more impressive.

Doing so takes significantly more time and effort. John Bauer, a retired Air Force navigator, has volunteered with the Over the Hill Gang for more than 10 years, and the Constellation Trails were the first he helped build.

These days, Bauer loves to move boulders, and with the rocky topography of the Dells, he was in luck. Chris Hosking is on the left and John Bauer is second from left.

The trailhead sits at the north end of the park, and the trails gain elevation as they work their way south. According to Bauer, the high ground near the back of the trail system proved the most challenging to build.

Small pieces of the aircraft still lie scattered throughout the area. The crew gathered the pieces they found and placed them next to the memorial near the trailhead.

T he Constellation Trails are just a few miles of trail in an area that features miles of city-owned trails, as well as hundreds of additional miles of trail on nearby Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management land.

Easy access and the variety and number of trails has made this stretch of northern Arizona a hiking and mountain biking destination. Hosking, originally from the United Kingdom, trained as an industrial designer and spent time in the Silicon Valley working for Apple.

While in the Sierras, he delved into trail design. Eventually, Hosking and his wife wanted a bigger town to raise their kids in, and after some research, Prescott ended up No.

Gil Stritar, a Prescott Valley resident who hikes nearly every day, says the Constellation Trails are his favorite in the area because of the ease of access and excellent views.

Also, this is the most scenic trail in the Dells in my opinion. According to Hosking, all the years of hard work, purchasing land, working agreements, and designing and building trails have come into focus this year as the COVID pandemic has spiked visits to trails sometimes by percent to percent.

The Constellation Trails have seen percent more traffic. While some ride their mountain bikes on the Constellation Trails, Hosking says there are usually more hikers due to the rocky terrain and challenging aspects of the trails.

This article originally appeared on Coffee or Die. Logan Nye. Gurkhas are known as some of the fiercest warriors ever to take up arms.

These soldiers from Nepal regularly receive high valor awards from both Britain and India because of their bravery, and they are skilled, in one case defeating Taliban ambushes while outnumbered over 30 to 1.

They fought in British forces in almost every major conflict of the 20th and 21st centuries including both World Wars and in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A Gurkha Rifles unit in The Kathmandu Valley is surrounded by the Himalayan mountains. In , the three valley kings had been fighting each other for years and suddenly realized that the Gurkha Army was invading.

In order to prevent conquest by the Gurkha, the Kathmandu kingdoms asked British officers serving nearby in the East India Company armies for assistance.

Captain George Kinloch led 2, soldiers with then-modern weapons into the valley to prevent the Gurkha expansion but failed to properly plan.

Battlefield defeats against the Gurkha were made worse by disease and inadequate medical supplies. A wave of desertions and a two-pronged assault launched by the Gurkha cinched the deal and Kinloch was forced to retreat from the valley.

By , the Gurkha armies were able to declare the valley and many of the surrounding mountains to be their own new nation, Nepal.

Over the next 46 years, both the Gurkha and the British expanded their areas of influence and control, creating a number of friction points both between themselves and other nations.

These friction points triggered the Anglo-Nepalese War in The Gurkha possessed much better knowledge of the terrain and plenty of veteran fighters.

The British had numerical and technological advantages with tens of thousands of Indian soldiers equipped by the East India Company.

Despite numerous British advantages, the campaign went badly for the first year. One of the generals was killed in a small skirmish the day before war was officially declared.

Other generals were known for cowardice on the battlefield, failing to attack when ordered. One even walked out of his camp.

Check the WATM podcas t to hear the author and other veterans discuss how the Gurkhas became feared warriors. Still, some of the British forces fought valiantly.

David Ochterlony led a siege at the primary Gurkha fortress in while another colonel and 2, men captured a secondary fort.

Filmed in South Africa, Namibia, and Mozambique, the series aired in July and spans seven minute episodes, starting with the Marine Recon team crossing the berm into Iraq during the opening stage of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
